Will I need a bone grafting procedure?

Will I need a bone grafting procedure? Date May 20, 2021

Not necessarily. Whether you require bone grafting depends on the amount of healthy jawbone available to support a dental implant.

After a tooth is lost or removed, the surrounding jawbone naturally begins to shrink over time. The amount of bone loss varies from person to person and can be influenced by factors such as how long the tooth has been missing, the location of the tooth, and your individual anatomy.

Many patients have sufficient bone to proceed with dental implant treatment without additional procedures. However, if there is not enough bone to securely support an implant, bone grafting or another bone augmentation procedure may be recommended.

The best way to determine whether bone grafting is required is through a clinical assessment and a 3D CBCT scan. This allows your dentist to accurately assess your bone levels and discuss the most suitable treatment options for your individual circumstances.

At Perth Dental Implant Centre, we perform 3D bone scans in-house and can often advise on the need for bone grafting during your consultation.
