Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that aims to build up missing jaw bone back to its original state to support natural teeth or dental implants. Small amounts of bone taken from the mouth are combined with artificial bone and placed in the area where jaw bone has been lost. The transplanted bone is covered by a membrane and left to fully integrate and heal within the mouth. A bone graft is often done at the same time as dental implant surgery.

A sinus lift procedure aims to graft extra bone into the upper jaw bone where the sinus cavity has expanded in the absence of a tooth root. The procedure can often be done at the same time as dental implant surgery, first by accessing the sinus through the upper jaw bone, carefully lifting the sinus membrane and then filling the area with a bone graft material.
